This season is off to an early start, with truffles already surfacing well before the end of April. Growers are trialing a variety of methods to ‘protect’ their truffles — including using soil mounds, sand, yoghurt pots, raised plastic covers, and even plant pots. Some are seeing good results with these techniques; others, despite their best efforts, are still ending up with rotten truffles. It’s a reminder that what works in one orchard won’t always guarantee success in another — it’s all about testing, tweaking, and learning what suits your soil, your trees, and your local conditions.
